The explosive run of activity by Hualun in recent years continues with 2023’s Tempus, as the Chinese quartet continues to see where the intertwinings of instrumental rock and electronics can take it, a reinvention of 70s avant-garde dreams in that area transferred into a new century on songs like “Scorch Off Towards The Utopia” and “Where’s Tommy?”’s crisp funk. At the same time there’s hints of more recent sonics, such as the sudden clipped notes in the collage of sounds of “TV Soul” and the building to a rough blast of beats that shifts to serenity in “Dunes.”
