Recorded at the same time as the acclaimed GREEN and seen by Yoshimura as a complement to it, 1986’s Surround is no less evocative of deep listening and careful detail, an ambient listening experience in the absolute sense of something simply heard in the day to day experience of life. Yet from the opening balance of the key melody and the mesmerizing background texture of “Time After Time,” Surround almost demands attention; the recurring melodies of “Something Blue” and the careful progression of “Time Forest” are very striking.
