Sunday’s Child

The idea here was to pull back from the atomized goop of Inside Out and guide Martyn back to songs, with Digby Smith back on board, with Martyn taking production credit again. The action is still between Martyn and Danny Thompson, with drummer Liam Genockey doing his best to keep up and stay out of the way at the same time. More than once, Martyn seems to have absorbed the ghost of his departed friend, Nick Drake, and on “Root Love,” he goes the other way, trying to sort of rock out entirely or at least be kind of fuzzy and tough. On “Clutches,” the band sounds like Little Feat? A really fun kind of schizo album.
