Joy And Pain

Released

Huge among their devoted fan base and pretty much unknown to the average pop/rock listener, soul/R’n’B band Maze released their fourth album, Joy and Pain, in 1980. It’s modern, slick and highly polished but this is uncommercial, uncompromising song-led soul music. There are no strings, no horn section, just keys/synths, guitar, bass and percussion and the mix of organic and synthetic — which can sometimes sound dated on albums from this time — is done here with consummate professionalism and panache.
