As Rhythm & Sound, Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald brought out all the dub reggae influence that had been implicit in their techno records. Their first string of dubplate-style 10” records on their Burial Mix imprint in 1996-7 were collaborations with Paul St Hilaire aka Tikiman, and were beautiful in their own right. But they hit new heights in the early 2000s working with a range of veteran reggae singers. “King in my Empire” with Cornell Campbell, which opens this collection of those tracks, is rightly considered a classic for the ages, but every track here retains mind-boggling potency. The incredibly human intimacy of the vocal production paired with the delicate fog and inhumanly vast scale of the rhythm tracks creates a profound and unique sensation.
