Winterreise

In the snow of Winterreise, guitarists Hajo Weber and Ulrich Ingenbold have buried one of ECM’s most obscure treasures. Their writing takes many paths toward the same horizon, which is lined with melodic beauty. Ingenbold’s “Karussell” is the session’s high point for its feeling of perpetual motion and childlike wonder, while “Sommerregen” (Summer Rain) takes us to a warmer climate. “Son’s Song” ends the session with a lullaby, tucking in an album that belongs in every guitar lover’s collection.
