Traditional Music of Ireland

He would later go on to be something of a superproducer as well as the leader of Solàs, but when he was very young Seamus Egan was just a jaw-droppingly proficient multi-instrumentalist. At age 14 he was, in fact, an All-Ireland Champion on four instruments. He recorded this, his debut solo album when he was just 15. On this album he plays flute, tres, banjo, mandolin, tin whistle, and uillean pipes, and what’s astounding is not just his remarkable technical facility but also his musical maturity; his use of ornaments, his phrasing, his register changes – everything he does bespeaks both ability and musical thinking well beyond his years. It’s both a gorgeous and a thrilling collection of traditional tunes.
