Even though drummer Jack DeJohnette holds the record for most appearances as an ECM session musician, his occasional flights as leader stand out as high points among them. In addition to highlighting the talents of reedmen David Murray and Arthur Blythe, along with bassist Peter Warren, it showcased the bandleader’s formidable prowess as composer in the repertoire-defining “Zoot Suite.” After a round robin of planned and unplanned exuberance (score one for the delightfully cosmic “Journey To The Twin Planet”), the set ends with two John Coltrane covers, comfortably placed among the jagged movements of DeJohnette’s artistry.
