I love that guitarist Keys, on a label called Black Jazz, in the middle of a chaotic and passionate upsurge in free, political blowing and shrieking, rocked up to the studio and said “I’m going to do some straight Grant Green jazz and even throw in a Monk cover.” The album still has the heat of the era on it, and the band has a genuine snap and burn. Check the closer, “B.K.,” where electric pianist Larry Nash plays his Rhodes through a wah pedal and the whole band rides a lethal dancefloor groove.
