She stayed with Fairport Convention long enough to make folk-rock history, then left to start her own band – which also lasted for only a year or two. Sandy was her solo debut, recorded in 1972 with an all-star cast that included her former bandmate Richard Thompson, Flying Burrito Brother “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow, and even the legendary New Orleans pianist and arranger Allan Toussaint. Stylistically, this sounds like a fairly typical turn-of-the-70s British folk-rock album – but that’s because she was one of the foremost architects of British folk-rock. Hearing her voice alongside Richard Thompson’s guitar again is just hair-raising.
