What had been a side indulgence during the Bauhaus days for Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins turned into a full band approach after the parent band called it a day in 1983, and the following year’s Pop showed that the trio, along with bassist Glenn Campling, had their own remarkable groove to showcase. While featuring the moodily mysterious, like the slinky “Lions” which opens the album and the majestic “Rain” (not a Beatles cover) that closes it, Pop also has quirky energy in abundance on the twisted kick of “War” and the bizarro loops of “Slender Fungus.”
