Children Of The Sun, like the Human Arts Ensemble and the Black Artists Group touring group, was a collective that, according to the liner notes of this, their sole release, “was together for little more than a year [playing] college concerts (when $ lucky) playing benefits for all kinds of groups of Black people and progressive whites.” Several key BAG members — saxophonist Oliver Lake, trumpeter Floyd LeFlure, and drummer Charles Bobo Shaw — are present, but the focus is on poet Ajulé Rutlin, whose dramatic, exhortatory style suits the music well. Lake and LeFlure deliver the free jazz goods, but the lesser-known members of the group, particularly bassist Arzinia Richardson and cellist Vincent Terrell, add a lot of atmosphere to the music.
