Almost, but not quite yet, verging on the full arena rock phase of their existence, on New Gold Dream Simple Minds perfected a remarkable fusion of new wave intensity, motorik drive and uplifting but never overbearing performances. From the opening “Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)” to the pulsing title track to the generous devotional “Glittering Prize,” Simple Minds embraced a feeling of light and hope that seemed to ride wires as much as ring over hilltops.
