Originally conceived as a trio date with South African pianist Dollar Brand (who was a no show), Don Cherry and Indian tabla player Latif Khan one June day in 1978. One side focused on the intricate tabla rhythms of Khan, with Cherry adding the subtlest of organ drones as accompaniment. The other side is one of Cherry’s most beatific spans of music. Khan keeps the heartbeat with his tabla while Cherry delicately layers trumpet, gongs, keyboards, donso n’goni, bamboo flute, and wordless vocals. Dedicated to Maurice White (of Earth, Wind & Fire fame) this suite drifts through ancient song, ethereal Javanesse gamelan ambience, mysterious netherworlds, and so much more, creating a wondrous inner journey.
