Jeff Parker went off in 2019, and brought his quartet to a small bar in LA, and recorded hours and hours of performances over the course of two years. This is very much a full band experience: drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Anna Butterss, and saxophonist Josh Johnson line up alongside Parker’s guitar. What’s remarkable is how many moods and practices Parker blends here. While feeling very relaxed, there’s a lot of attention paid to the compositions, which shade into minimalist repetition and then into looser thematic exploration, and then some classic heads and tails play, and then reconfigured beat music. Casual only at the level of feel. Deeply sophisticated shit.
