Plans for 2023’s Memento Mori were changed by Andrew Fletcher’s passing in 2022, sadly making the album the first of their long career as a duo. But with both Dave Gahan and Martin Gore in good voice and a fine stream of songs – including, notably, a number of Gore collaborations with Psychedelic Furs leader Richard Butler – the album foregrounded electronics in a way the band hadn’t done in a while, leavening wistful atmospheres with darker subjects on songs like “My Favourite Stranger,” “Wagging Tongues” and “People Are Good.”
