After touring behind the dark-toned, proto-Goth The Idiot, Iggy Pop and David Bowie crashed back into the studio in spring 1977 and recorded Lust For Life in eight days with Iggy’s road band. The result is a high-energy, musically tight but improvisatory album with some of Pop’s most brilliantly tossed-off lyrics, backed by absolutely stomping hard-rock riffs and massive bass and drums from Tony and Hunt Sales (sons of TV comedian Soupy Sales). The title track, “The Passenger,” and the absurdist shout-along “Success” — inexplicably chosen as the single — are all among the best songs of Pop’s career, and there’s not a truly bad track on the album.
