John Carpenter may be the greatest genre filmmaker in the history of the medium – his run from 1976-88, in which he updated and redefined action, science fiction, and horror, is basically untouchable. Even though he composed and performed (along with collaborators like Alan Howarth) the music for his films, he didn’t put out a proper non-soundtrack work until 2014. He did not disappoint. The pulsating synth lines and sinister guitar stabs that characterized his classic scores for movies like Halloween and Christine found new homes in detached themes like “Vector” and “Domain.” Even if he’s retired from the visual side of things, he continues to inspire with these bite-sized B-movies.
