Led by mandolinist Roland White and his guitar-playing brother Clarence, the Kentucky Colonels burst out of California in the early 1960s with a hard-charging traditional bluegrass sound that positioned them perfectly to take advantage of the growing popular interest in folk and traditional music. This album is evidence of their success in doing so: it documents their performance at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival, and finds them playing a barnburning set of traditional material like “Soldier’s Joy,” “Roll on Buddy,” and gospel classics “Over in the Glory Land” and “Get Down on Your Knees and Pray.”
