When mandolinist David Grisman began making his move out of bluegrass and into jazz, it was clear immediately that one of his greatest inspirations was the 1930s “Gypsy jazz” of guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grapelli. On this live 1981 recording, he sounds like he can barely contain his glee as he introduces Grapelli to the audience; they then break into a lilting, elegant, and powerfully swinging rendition of “Shine.” Grapelli was 73 years old at the time of this performance, but he plays with the energy of a 20-year old, and the rest of the band does an admirable job keeping up.
