Hiding Places, the full length collaboration from the prophetic New York MC billy woods and LA-based master of textured organic production Kenny Segal, is one of the great records of our time. At times enlightening, at times claustrophobic, woods fills in the spaces left in Segal’s woozy, ever-shifting beats. Processed guitar sounds from Segal collaborator Ryan Crosby keeps the music feeling very human, almost tactile… the producer’s hand is very evident in the final product. woods is one of hip-hop’s great writers, and this record concludes with his unparalleled masterpiece, “Red Dust” an exorcism on wax where the cerebral MC allows the listener access to the vast emotional undercurrent of the intellect that defines his raps.
