“Rejoice, a new and wondrous era has begun,” leader Ken Chaney intones, and we’re off into trumpets, bells, and piano sweeps that feel more than a little familiar. This is the Alice Coltrane approach, the gentle rummaging with simple themes. The whole album is an unusually strong blowing affair, slightly more straight ahead than the trappings would indicate but still free-flowing and fiery.
