Harrison: Seven Pastorales; Glanville-Hicks: Etruscan Concerto; Riley: June Buddhas

Released

Dennis Russell Davies conducts the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra in this colorful program of modern American music. Although Lou Harrison is given the biggest name on the marquee, the Etruscan Concerto of Peggy Glanville-Hicks leads the program with pianist Keith Jarrett at the helm. The Aaron Copland-esque writing is perfectly suited for Jarrett’s lush greenery in the outer movements, while the central “Meditation” gives him room to preen his feathers. Harrison’s superb Seven Pastorales and Terry Riley’s near-orientalist June Buddhas make for provocative company.
