Darren Cunningham has perfected a process, much like his pal Will Bevan of Burial. The cynical will call it few plug-ins, which is like saying Kubrick liked tracking shots. It’s a way of seeing the world, and when the artist throws himself into it, the listener goes along. He’s got his Detroit side, where his drum patterns root down, and his just-fished-this-out-of-the-escape-pod sensibility for distressing and pushing sounds. The title track is a 19-minute kind of District 9 pressure arc, and the remaining three tracks do more pulse-based things, especially “Dream,” his most openly Detroit track in ages.
