Pavement with pedal steel, sure, but I hear more Grifters, frankly, and the biggest seed for this tree is Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Lenderman sings an awful lot like Parsons, which is rare, but the real link to the wild horse himself is that Lenderman doesn’t have a lot of truck with Nineties irony. These are direct, sincere songs and when Lenderman sings about being “fucked up,” it’s not a badge of pride or a joke.
