Act 3 cover
Released

On their third album, the groundbreaking progressive bluegrass band The Seldom Scene really start showing off their range. It opens with a brief and quiet instrumental version of the song “Chim-chim-cher-ee” from Mary Poppins, then charges into a high-energy, meat-and-potatoes version of Bill Monroe’s “Little Georgia Rose,” as straight-ahead a bluegrass standard as you could ask for; John Duffey’s mandolin solo starts off as a tribute to the playing of Monroe before veering off into Duffey’s trademark jazzy style. The rest of the album follows that pattern, juxtaposing traditional and forward-looking bluegrass in a thrilling way.
