A Flock of Seagulls

Released

Don’t get distracted by Mike Score’s haircut – A Flock of Seagulls’ debut was one of the finest space rock records of the 80s. Hell, tune down the guitars and put a little more echo on the vocals and you basically get Hawkwind. “I Ran” is, of course, the group’s crowning achievement, a shimmering slice of sci-fi pop that makes even more sense when you realize that this is a concept record about an alien invasion. Bubblegum ballad “Space-Age Love Song,” the Krautrocking “Telecommunication,” and the chilly Numan-esque “Modern Love Is Automatic” show that, for all the confectionery catchiness AFOS excelled at, their space had more depth than their reputation would lead you to believe.
