Jeri-Jeri – which later evolved into Ndagga Rhythm Force – is a supergroup of Senegalese musicians and dancers, produced and mixed (including during live shows) by Berlin studio magician Mark Ernestus. On this debut record (which also came as an instrumental version, Ndagga Versions) he really does work magic: his presence is seemingly transparent, letting the incredibly complex percussion and song structures speak for themselves. But if you compare it to other recordings of similar music, whether local or “westernised,” the respect he has for the frequencies of every drum, every voice becomes abundantly clear.
